Protecting Oman's coastline through resilient coastal engineering and sustainable infrastructure development.
Project Location: Al Bahri Road, Muttrah, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman
Client: Muscat Municipality
Contractor: Cahit Trading & Contracting LLC
Project Status: Ongoing
Project Overview
Cahit Trading & Contracting LLC is undertaking the Construction of Remedial Measures for Revetment Failure Along Al Bahri Road in Muttrah Area – Phase 01, an important coastal infrastructure project commissioned by Muscat Municipality.
Located along the coastline of Muttrah, Muscat, the project focuses on remedial works to address revetment failure and strengthen coastal protection infrastructure along Al Bahri Road. Coastal revetments and seawalls play a vital role in protecting shorelines and adjacent infrastructure against wave action, erosion, and the ongoing effects of marine conditions.
Through specialized marine construction activities, including dredging, rock armour placement, CORE-LOC concrete armour unit casting and placement, and seawall construction, the project aims to support the rehabilitation and resilience of the affected coastal areas.
The works are being executed across designated project zones, with activities planned to address the specific coastal protection requirements of Zones 4 and 5.
Scope of Work
The project includes a range of marine and coastal engineering activities designed to rehabilitate the affected revetment sections and strengthen shoreline protection.
Zone 4 – Dredging and Rock Armour Placement
Works in Zone 4 include:
Dredging operations: Removal of designated seabed material to facilitate the required coastal protection works and prepare the working area.
Rock armour layer placement: Installation of protective rock armour to reinforce the coastal revetment and provide resistance against wave action and shoreline erosion.
The correct placement of rock armour is an important component of coastal protection, helping to dissipate wave energy and improve the stability of the shoreline protection system.
Zone 5 – Coastal Protection and Seawall Construction
Zone 5 incorporates several key marine construction activities:
Rock armour layer placement: Installation of protective rock layers to strengthen the revetment and improve resistance to marine forces.
CORE-LOC casting and placement: Production and installation of specialized concrete armour units designed to provide coastal protection through an engineered interlocking arrangement.
Dredging: Seabed preparation to support the planned marine construction activities.
Seawall construction: Construction of a coastal defence structure intended to provide additional protection and contribute to the long-term stability of the affected shoreline.
The combination of rock armour, concrete armour units, and seawall construction forms a coordinated approach to addressing the project's coastal protection requirements.
The Importance of Coastal Revetment Rehabilitation
Coastal infrastructure is continuously exposed to environmental forces, including waves, currents, tidal fluctuations, and the movement of sediment. Over time, these forces can contribute to erosion, displacement of protective materials, and deterioration of coastal defence structures.
Remedial works are therefore essential to restoring the performance of damaged revetments and protecting nearby roads and infrastructure.
The Al Bahri Road project represents an important investment in maintaining the resilience of coastal infrastructure in Muttrah. By implementing appropriate marine construction measures, the project supports the continued protection of the coastal corridor and helps address the challenges associated with maintaining infrastructure in a marine environment.
Engineering Quality, Safety and Environmental Responsibility
Cahit Trading & Contracting LLC recognizes the importance of quality, safety, and environmental management in delivering marine and coastal construction projects.
Activities such as dredging, heavy rock placement, concrete armour unit handling, and seawall construction require careful planning, competent personnel, suitable equipment, and effective coordination of site operations.
Key considerations during execution include:
Maintaining safe working practices during marine construction and heavy lifting activities.
Ensuring appropriate handling, transportation, casting, and placement of construction materials.
Following approved construction drawings, technical specifications, and inspection requirements.
Coordinating work activities to support quality control and efficient project delivery.
Applying appropriate environmental controls during dredging and other marine operations.
Monitoring construction progress against the approved project programme.
These principles help support the delivery of reliable coastal infrastructure while promoting responsible construction practices.
Cahit Trading & Contracting LLC: Supporting Oman's Infrastructure Development
Cahit Trading & Contracting LLC continues to contribute to Oman's infrastructure development through construction activities across civil engineering, marine and coastal works, and related infrastructure sectors.
The Al Bahri Road Revetment Remedial Works project demonstrates the importance of specialized construction solutions in maintaining and strengthening infrastructure exposed to challenging coastal conditions.
Working with Muscat Municipality, Cahit Trading & Contracting LLC is progressing with Phase 01 of the project, with completion expected on 3 April 2027.
The project reflects the broader importance of investing in resilient infrastructure, maintaining public assets, and applying appropriate engineering solutions to support Oman's long-term development objectives.
Looking Ahead
As work continues across Zones 4 and 5, the project remains focused on delivering the specified dredging, rock armour placement, CORE-LOC casting and installation, and seawall construction activities.
Through careful execution and coordination, Cahit Trading & Contracting LLC aims to contribute to the rehabilitation of the affected coastal protection structures along Al Bahri Road and support the continued resilience of this important area of Muttrah.
